MAYOR OF LANE COVE'S WELCOME

On behalf of the 33,000 residents of the Municipality of Lane Cove, I welcome all competitors and other visitors involved in the Winning Appliances 73rd 12 ft Skiff Australian Titles.

The Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club was established in 1896 (the Municipality was formed in 1895) and became the “home” of 12ft Skiffs at the end of Word War I.

Since that first year many generations of Lane Cove residents have enjoyed wonderful and competitive sailing on the beautiful Lane Cove River and more broadly, Sydney Harbour. The Club has produced many champions and we are proud of all sailors who have built on the fine reputation of the Club. The Club, the Community and the Council have enjoyed great relationships for well over a hundred years and we know this will continue as Lane Cove has fine sporting traditions.

I am extremely pleased that Lane Cove is hosting the 2008 12ft Skiff titles and I am sure we will see great competition between great rivals.

I can assure you that the “natives” are friendly and I know that they will welcome you warmly whilst you are in Lane Cove.

We are delighted that you are visiting Lane Cove for these titles and wish you well in the regatta.

Please enjoy your stay with us, and happy sailing!

Councillor Ian Longbottom

Mayor of Lane Cove

COMMODORE’S WELCOME

On behalf of all the members of Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the competitors in the Winning Appliances 73rd 12ft Skiff Australian National Championships.

Lane Cove is very proud to be hosting the regatta. Our Club’s association with the class goes back to 1918 and the 12ft Skiff class is a great inspiration to the many young people that we have in our ‘Learn to Sail" and junior programs. Throughout the regatta the Club will have a large team of volunteers working to make sure that the racing and the social programs meet the needs of the many visiting sailors, supporters and spectators. We wish all our visitors well in the regatta.

LANE COVE PATRON'S WELCOME

It is my pleasure to welcome all competitors and their families and friends to the 12ft Nationals this Easter. Skiff sailors who are upper harbour "river rats" are known for their tactical skill, exact boat handling and endless patience so I am sure that the crew who is crowned 2008 12ft National Champion this year will have conquered a range of different conditions to wrestle the trophy from within a tight fleet. I wish everyone involved a fun and fair regatta and please enjoy the great LC12ftSSC hospitality

Just had a look, long term weather wise and it says a front through with southerly winds and rain Friday Saturday before going through the east to northeast Sunday Monday. This is still a long way out but still interesting and will make for a diverse regatta.

NSW 12 FOOT SKIFF ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

On behalf of the NSW 12ft Sailing Skiff Association I warmly welcome all competitors to the Winning Appliances 73rd 12ft Skiff Australian Titles, especially those travelling from Queensland.

The 12ft Skiff class is enjoying a period of strong competition on the water with good fleets having attended recent NSW State Championship events and the Garde Sprint Series. It is also a time of strong competition between design ideas. After a period in which a single hull design has dominated racing, this year we will see several significantly different hull designs at the top end of the fleet. This is a very healthy trend and supports the strong development focus of the class.

The recent Inter-dominion Championships in Wellington New Zealand showed us that Australia is close to recapturing the Inter-dominion title. It also showed us that we need to work hard to build our overall fleet strength and foster good National competition.

This Championship will be a good step in that direction
