The Lane Cove ILCA (previously Laser) class has approximately 23 active sailing members and races each Saturday during our sailing season. Expect 10 - 15 starters spread across ILCA 7 (Standard), ILCA 6 (Radial) Rigs and a growing number of ILCA 4s (4.7). The ILCA courses incorporate triangles with clear air out in the main upper harbour area (ILCA 4s can sail a 3/4 course). These courses are designed to avoid congested areas and provide good sailing angles with plenty of variety. The races commence and finish at the club house in the Lane Cove River which provides a great vantage point for family & spectators. Race presentations take place after racing in a convivial atmosphere at the family orientated club.
We have ILCAs rigging at the Woodford Bay ILCA Shed (Dunois St.), the Main Clubhouse (Stuart St.), and at various points around the upper harbour shore. There will be five Club Championships and three handicap start races with trophies awarded for overall Club Champion, Points Score Champion, Handicap Champion and weekly trophies.
The fleet is a combination of ages (16 -75) and sailing skill levels range from expert to complete beginner. We have a mentoring program which assists those with little experience to join in, have fun and progress. There are also a small number of club ILCAs which are used as part of our Learn-to-Sail programme and can also be made available for use by prospective members (naturally some rules apply to this, but feel free to enquire). We have quite a few examples of sailors with no previous experience enjoying a race every week and showing competitive skill. We try to cater to the needs of any person looking to join us while providing a healthy competitive racing environment to help everyone improve.
Both females and males enjoy ILCA sailing where those up to about 75kg prefer the ILCA 6 rig, with a slightly smaller sail, while heavier sailors prefer the ILCA 7 rig. Some sailors have both rigs and use their ILCA 6 on windier days and ILCA 7 for lighter winds with the same hull and rigging being used for both. The ILCA 4 rig is smaller again and is better suited to lighter sailors and our junior fleet.
