LC12ftSSC eNews 20th June 2024

Dear Members,

I hope you are enjoying the off-season and are looking forward to the start of the sailing season (and some warmer weather) in September. This is a fairly full newsletter, with lots of important information regarding happenings behind-the scenes, so let's jump in.

Draft AGM Minutes

As highlighted in the last eNews, the Club’s annual AGM was held on Monday the 3rd June. During this meeting, the position holders for the 2023/24 season stepped down, and position holders for the 2024/25 season were elected. Please see a draft of the minutes from the AGM for a complete list of the new officer bearers here. These minutes will be finalised during the 2025 AGM (scheduled for the 2nd June 2025). Feel free to mark this date in your diary if you are feeling particularly organised!

Five position holders who I would like to highlight in particular are our new Class Secretaries. They are:

The Class Secretaries will be in-touch with sailors imminently to discuss the upcoming season, including confirming trophies for the sailing programme. They can also be contacted via the above email addresses, and I encourage you to reach out to them, particularly if you need assistance identifying boats and sailing partners.

2024/25 Season Key Dates

Key dates for the upcoming 2024/25 season have been set:

With 12 weeks until the start of the sailing season take this as a reminder not to leave your winter maintenance (and training?) to the last minute!

Key Management Committee Initiatives

The new Committee had a full agenda when it met for the first time on Monday.

Highlights were:

This first Committee meeting was face-to-face, but we will be moving to a mix of monthly online or face-to-face meetings going forward.  It’s hoped to encourage input, and ease the travel burden, for as many volunteer Committee members as possible.

Grants for Rounding Marks & RIB Trailer

An FME Inflatable buoy we are evaluating

A highlight since last eNews was our successful application for two Community Building Partnership Grants - $6k towards new inflatable rounding marks, and $5.2k for a trailer for the Bill Mobbs.

A big thank you to John Hayward for his patient efforts pursuing the myriad of grants out there, and Lane Cove State MP Anthony Roberts for advocating on our behalf.

Commodore with the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP

Anthony dropped by the Club last week to pass on the good news, and record a short video with the new Commodore.  We made sure it highlighted our upcoming Learn-to-Sail program, and Anthony also offered to promote Learn-to-Sail again closer to the January program.

The new marks should improve visibility and safety on the Harbour, and in the River.  The trailer will give us maintenance and antifouling flexibility, and the ability to support selected away events when the RIB is not needed at the Club.

Around the Slips

You would be remiss in thinking that because the 2023/24 season has finished, that all boats have been packed up for the winter. Laser sailors have been taking advantage of the warm winter weather to conduct some unofficial training. Under the guidance of experienced Laser sailors, David Rosenthall, Mark Jansons and Greg Cribbin, some newer recruits to the fleet have been gaining some valuable tips and tricks. This is sure to make for some fun and competitive sailing in the 2024/25 season!

If you need more of a reminder of the fun that can be had on the water, check out the recently released footage of the 12ft Skiff Sprint Series held at the Sydney Flying Squadron in March.

Instructor Training

Interested in developing your skills over winter?

An Assistant Dinghy Instructor / Dinghy Instructor course will be run at the Club on 13th and 14th of July. Sailors who have helped with LC12ftSSC Learn to Sail can receive support to attend this training. Please email to find out more.

End of Financial Year Donations

As we rapidly approach the end of the financial year, we wanted to remind you about the option of making a tax-deductible donation to the Club via our partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant impact by funding essential equipment, training, and facilities. Through a donation you can either choose to support our infrastructure fund, which will go towards replacing the Club’s slipway and upgrading our change room facilities, or support our response boats and equipment for Sail Training. Thank you for your support!
